COPYWRITER | MESSAGING STRATEGIST | BUSINESS FROM ANYWHERE COACH
Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a speed networking event where I collected an impressive 30 namecards from various professionals. While the event itself was buzzing with potential, excitement, and connection, what I later experienced when revisiting these namecards is an essential lesson for any professional.
8/30 cards made no sense
Out of the 30 cards I had in hand, a staggering 8 of them left me puzzled, unable to recall or discern what the cardholder's profession or services were. Yes, they had their company name, but none of these were familiar brands. A title like "director" did little to jog my memory. I found myself wondering, "What does their company do?"
Nearly half the cards made no impression
Another 14 cards did identify the profession, but provided no compelling reason or incentive to reconnect. Sure, I knew what they did, but why should I contact them amongst a sea of professionals in similar roles?
Photos aren't always enough
Additionally, 6 cards featured photos, aiding my recollection. Yet, it's ironic that 5 out of these 6 photographic cards failed to explain their services clearly.
Design over substance
There was one card in particular that boasted a striking design. While it caught my eye, it, unfortunately, failed to capture my interest to reach out, proving that aesthetics alone can't win the day. Another individual took an innovative approach by attaching a voucher to their card, immediately providing an incentive for follow-up.
Only 7 made the grade
Thankfully, 7 individuals effectively used their namecards to highlight their services and unique selling points.
So, what lessons can we glean from this networking saga?
5 Tips for Crafting a Namecard that Sells:
Clearly Define Your Services: Don't assume people will remember. Your card should serve as a succinct reminder long after you've left the scene. Instead of just “Director”, how about “Director of Sustainable Energy Solutions”?
Offer a Unique Selling Point (USP): Why should someone choose your services over others? This could be experience, specialisation, or even a unique approach to problems.
Use Visuals Thoughtfully: Including a photo can be a game-changer for recall, but it shouldn’t substitute the need for clear information. If you have a great design, ensure it complements, not overshadows, essential details.
Provide a Call-to-Action or Incentive: Whether it's a discount, a free consultation, or a compelling reason to visit your website, give the holder of your card a reason to take the next step.
Quality Over Quantity: A well-made, durable card not only lasts longer but also communicates professionalism and value. It's a tactile representation of your brand; don't skimp on it.
Your namecard can be an ambassador for your brand long after networking events. A well-thought-out card can spark interest, rekindle conversations and pave the way for fruitful collaborations. After all, in the world of business, it's often the little things that make a big difference.
