I need to talk to my spouse

Ever heard: “I need to speak to my spouse before I make a decision” or “I need to speak to my business partner before I make a decision”?

This common objection is a way for people to delay buying from you or say no in a polite way when they have no intention of taking your offer.

By leaving the decision to someone else, they don't have to deal with any further push for the sale.

OK, let’s back up a bit here. Push for the sale? First of all, if you're feeling pushy and you feel like you're trying to push a sale on someone, you're doing it wrong.

We're building the business up here so that it's never a push. It's never salesy. You're simply putting your offer in front of people who want it. There’s no sales involved here.

You shouldn't be in a situation where people need to ask their spouse or their partner for permission to work with you. If you are, you didn’t qualify them as the decision maker.

I know I want my customers to be independent people that make their own decisions and have their own money so when I qualify my potential clients, this objection won’t come up.

Deal with the decision maker.

If the person you are speaking with can't make the decision, you're wasting your time talking to them in the first place. When they go ask their spouse, their spouse can’t possibly understand the value promised as they weren’t there.

So, ask qualifying questions. “If I go through my programme with you now, do you have the ability to make the decision now or do you need to speak to someone else?”

If they need to speak with someone, postpone the session until the decision maker can be there.

Of course, you avoid this whole dilemma if you can just target the decision owners in the first place.
