How to start an online business

Starting an online business can feel overwhelming, especially if you've never done it before or you’ve always been a salaried employee used to the security of a regular pay cheque. But you have a burning desire to make the change, take that jump, or leap of faith. Many before you have tried and succeeded, so why not you?

I thought hard about putting this article out because, after I wrote it, I thought - wow - that's a lot to handle. And if I feel like that, having run a business for 20 years, what would be going through your mind as a new start-up?

You see, I don't want to sugar coat the journey. Starting a business is no walk in the park. It's hard. You will face setbacks and you'll have to have the mindset to deal with that, pick yourself up and keep going.

That said, it's a process and as long as you take the steps in the right order, one at a time, success should follow. It's simple. It's just not easy!

OK, now we've dealt with that elephant, let's carry on, because you aren't going to let a little overwhelm stop you. That's not who you are.

This guide will walk you through the process, offering practical tips and reassurance that the fear is only in your mind. The key is to feel the fear (I’m not going to lie and say it goes away) and do it anyway. It’s all about following a structured path, believing in yourself and making the moves.

Are You in Your Right Mind?

The first and most crucial step in starting an online business is nurturing the right mindset. Your mindset will determine how you handle challenges, setbacks and successes. A growth mindset, in particular, is essential. This means believing that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, learning and persistence.

You are intelligent and you can work out any problem that gets in your way.

Embracing this attitude will help you overcome obstacles and continuously improve. It's something that will always be a work in progress.

It's also vital to overcome the fear of failure. Failure is an inevitable part of the entrepreneurial journey. Every successful entrepreneur has faced failures but used them as learning experiences. Don't let the fear of failure paralyse you; instead, see it as an opportunity to grow and refine your approach.

Often, and you've probably notice this yourself in daily life, we seem to blow up our fears and imagine the worst case scenario. Does the worst case ever happen? Rarely. We usually end up thinking, what was I ever worried about?

Maintaining a positive outlook and being resilient in the face of challenges will keep you motivated.

How to keep a positive mindset? Surround yourself with supportive people, seek inspiration from those who have succeeded, consume books and courses that remind you of the right mindset you should have.

Get Used to Being Uncomfortable

Starting an online business requires stepping out of your comfort zone. This can be intimidating, but it is essential for growth. Nothing grows in your comfort zone.

Taking small steps is key. You don't have to make giant leaps; start with small, manageable tasks that push you slightly out of your comfort zone. As you accomplish these tasks, your confidence will grow, and so will your willingness to take on bigger challenges.

Seeking support from mentors or joining a community of like-minded entrepreneurs can provide the guidance, encouragement and accountability you need. These networks can offer valuable insights and help you navigate the complexities of starting a business.

It's also important to celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Acknowledging and celebrating your achievements will reinforce your efforts and motivate you to keep going.

Know Who You Serve and Why

Before diving into the technical aspects of starting an online business, you need to identify your niche and target audience. Who has the problem you solve?

This involves researching market trends to find gaps or emerging trends that align with your interests and expertise. You can do this through online research, surveys, polls on social media.

Defining your unique selling proposition (USP) is crucial. What makes your business different from competitors? Your USP will help you stand out in the market.

Understanding your audience is equally important. Create a detailed profile of your ideal customer. What are their needs, preferences, and pain points? This information will guide your marketing and product development efforts, ensuring that your offerings resonate with your target market.

Get Seen Online

Your online presence is critical to your business’s success. Create a personal brand website that tells people who you are and a website for your buisness. reason? People will check you out before doing usiness with you. Keep this in mind when designing your sites.

Ensure that your sites are user-friendly, visually appealing, and optimised for search engines (SEO).

Leverage social media to reach your audience. Choose platforms where your target audience is active and regularly post engaging content. Interact with your audience in groups they hang out in, and show your expertise through free advice.

Don't discount paid social media advertising to increase your reach once you have some income coming in. It's the fastest way to grow and well worth the investment.

Developing a content strategy is also important. Provide valuable content that addresses your audience's needs. This can include blog posts, videos, podcasts, and more. Content marketing will help establish your authority and drive traffic to your website.

Set Up the Technical Infrastructure

To run an online business, you need the right technical infrastructure. Choose a memorable domain name and a reliable hosting provider. You’ll also need an all-in-one marketing CRM tool. Some are super easy to use. If you’re selling physical products, select an e-commerce platform like Shopify, especially designed for e-commerce businesses.

Integrate a secure payment gateway to take payments online. Use analytics tools like Google Analytics to track your website and ad performance and gain insights into your audience’s behaviour.

Launch Your First Offer

With your online presence established and technical infrastructure in place, it’s time to launch your business with an attractive offer.

Start with a soft launch to test your website and systems. Invite friends, family, and a small group of potential customers to provide feedback.

Once any issues have been addressed, proceed with your official launch. Announce it through your website, social media, email newsletters and press releases.

Rinse and Repeat

Marketing is an ongoing effort that requires creativity and persistence. Optimise your website for search engines (SEO) to rank higher in search results, driving organic traffic.

Use pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on platforms like Google Ads and social media to attract targeted traffic.

Build an email list and send regular newsletters to engage with your audience and promote your products or services.

Collaborate with influencers in your niche to reach a wider audience.

Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and testimonials, which can build trust and attract new customers.

Keep Watch and Pivot When Needed

Continuous improvement is key to long-term success. Regularly analyse your business’s performance and make data-driven decisions. Monitor key metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, customer acquisition costs, and lifetime value. Gather feedback from your customers to understand their needs and identify areas for improvement. Stay agile and be willing to pivot and adapt your strategies based on your findings.

With the rapid changes driven by changing IT solutions, this is more critical than ever. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and staying flexible will help you stay ahead.

Starting an online business is a journey that requires courage, persistence and a willingness to learn. By following these steps and maintaining the right mindset, you can navigate the challenges and build a successful online business. Remember, every expert was once a beginner, and every successful business started with a single step. Embrace the process, step out of your comfort zone and watch your comfort zone grow along with your business. There is nothing to fear—just a path to follow and a dream to achieve.

However, one word of warning: It's one thing to be aware of the steps to take. It’s another thing entirely to actually take them. Without a clear, step-by-step approach to follow, it can all seem overwhelming. Need a coach to walk you through the process step by step and hold you accountable to actually do the work?
